Southern Speed has won the 2011 Caulfield Cup. Newcastle Cup winner Green Moon finished Second with Tullamore third.

Four-year-old mare Southern Speed, trained by Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas, won by 1.5 lengths from a strong Green Moon.

Heavily backed race favourite December Draw finished last, trailing to the back of the field down the straight, after positioning well in the early part of the race.

German runner Lucas Cranach produced an impressive run from out wide, finishing fifth, an ominous sign for the Melbourne Cup.

2010 Caulfield Cup Results & Winner

The 2010 Caulfield Cup was an incredible run that saw an exceptional performance from Gai Waterhouse’s Descarado. No one could have expected it from a horse that finished fourteen from sixteen in the Turnbull Stakes, but the four year old gelding did it, in a hell of a run.

Early in the run, Herculian Prince and Triple Honour fought for the lead, but it was all for naught as the pack made it round the final turn. Descarado moved forward from where he had sat between fourth and second, eventually getting to the front and extending his lead.

Harris Tweed managed a second place, greatly improving on his tenth place finish in last year’s Caulfield Cup results. His season has hinted at preparation for an incredible Melbourne Cup run, and a place finish in the big race is looking very likely after this Caulfield Cup performance.

Monaco Consul finished photo third, a much better place in the Caulfield Cup results than one would have expected from his awful season up to now. Again, this could easily hint at a great Melbourne Cup run, though we will need to see his Cox Plate run next week first.

2009 Caulfield Cup Results

The 2009 Caulfield Cup was an exciting run that eventually saw Viewed take the title.

Viewed was hardly a favourite at $13, but he had a good run staying in the middle of the pack for much of the race, before storming to take the lead just 100 metres from the finish.

In second was Roman Emperor, followed by Vigor in third. Roman Emperor was in first at the 200m to go mark, but was soon passed by Viewed. Vigor remained near the front for the entire run and was impressive to hold onto third at the end.
