A maximum field of 18 plus four emergencies were accepted to take on the $3 million Group 1 Crown Golden Ale Caulfield Cup (2400m) this Saturday.

Just four mares, one of which is an emergency, are set to take on the boys in the race with Lucia Valentina leading the pack. She is the dominant favourite in the Caulfield Cup betting market and set to become the first winning mare since Southern Speed (2011).

The four-year-old shot to the top of the betting field following her surprise Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) win at Flemington Racecourse on October 4th.

She is in great form following another spring win with the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) and a fast-finishing sixth place in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m).

Despite a talented field chock-full of talented horses, there is only one other single figure hopeful – the Yoshito Yahagi-trained Bande ($9).

The five-year-old horse is in-form ahead of the Caulfield Cup following two wins from his last five starts, and a further three minor placings.

A Listed Sapporo Nikkei (2600m) winner his last time out proves the Irish import can tackle the distance, though this will be his first trip on Australian soil.

Sitting just wide of single figure odds is the Japanese superstar Admire Rakti ($11). The horse will partner jockey Zac Purton in his first Australian tilt, but will need to overcome a top weight of 58kg which is up to six kilos heavier than his rivals.

Top Sydney trainer Chris Waller dominates the field with four guaranteed runners: Junoob and Who Shot Thebarman ($13), Hawkspur ($19), and Moriarty ($21).

Junoob and Who Shot Thebarman will both carry 1.5kg weight penalties in the race, following their wins in the Group 1 Metropolitan (2400m) and Group 3 Bart Cummings (2520m), respectively.

Hawkspur has had a hit-and-miss spring campaign, after running in five events since August. The gelding has only been successful once, in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) though he was a fast-finisher in the George Main, missing out on a placing by just under one length.

Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m) winner his last time out, Moriarty is the market mover of the Ladbrokes.com.au Caulfield Cup betting market, having already shortened from $26 to $21.

Of course these odds could all change this afternoon following the barrier draw, which will be announced live at 5:30pm (local time).

Will the favourites draw wide? Who will enjoy the inside run? Only time will tell.
